West Liberty Heritage Foundation
Description
The West Liberty Heritage Foundation is a historic minded 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 1999 for the purpose of collecting, preserving, promoting, and perpetuating West Liberty’s heritage.
Notably, they are responsible for the community's unique West Liberty Heritage Depot Museum and Heritage Park, located at 405 N. Elm Street. The grounds are open to the public, with several displays including the Heritage Barn, a one-room Swamp School, a 1930’s Tourist Cabin, a 1935 switch engine, an antique carousel and more. The grounds are also the location for the beginning of West Liberty's walking trail.
The Heritage Depot Museum is the byproduct of the Foundation's first major project, restoring and preserving the 1897 Rock Island Railroad Dept. The city became an important railroad hub following the arrival of the east-west railroad line in 1855 and subsequent north-south line in 1870. The Foundation restored the depot and turned it into a museum packed with local and regional history.
